Gŵyl Dewi

Saturday, March 1st 2008 was the feast day or festival of St David – Dewi Sant. Dewi, the patron saint of Wales, died on this day in the year 589. Traditionally a leek (cenhinen) or daffodil (cenhinen Pedr) is worn. There is an old saying, “Gwisg genhinen yn dy gap a gwisg hi yn dy galon.” – “Wear a leek in your cap and wear it in your heart.” Read more about Dewi in the history centre on this website. Enjoy your celebrations and don’t forget to send an e-card.
Santes Dwynwen’s Day (25 January)
Celebrate the day of Welsh lovers by sending an e-card to your loved one or loved ones!Hen Galan - Old New Year
In September 1752 Britain started to use the calendar of Pope Gregory XIII and 11 days were dropped from the old calendar of Julius Caesar. Wednesday 2 September was the last day of the Julian calendar and was followed by Thursday 14 September – the first day of the Gregorian calendar which is still used today throughout the world.
In parts of Wales, people were unhappy about this change and continued to celebrate the new year (Dydd Calan) on January 13, old new year’s day (Hen Galan). The custom is still alive in the Gwaun Valley, which includes Fishguard in Pembrokeshire. So, if you have family or friends in that area, it’s still not too late to wish them Happy New Year – Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!

What is Your Level?
As most Welsh for Adults services and resources are now labelled as Entry, Foundation, Intermediate, Higher or Proficiency, it is helpful to know where, roughly, you are! This tool, available through www.acen.co.uk, www.learnons4c.co.uk and www.dysgwr.com will help you to assess your level through a series of random multiple choice questions. The results will only be a guide as we can't assess your oral and aural skills but it is a serious assessment and will take at least 15-20 minutes.
The Acen Magazine with North Walian Forms
For the first time, part of the Acen magazine is available with forms used in classes in north Wales. Go to www.learnons4c.co.uk or www.acen.co.uk to download free of charge. Please let us have your comments. If positive the whole magazine will be available from September.
