S4C and Welsh Learners
S4C's contribution to the field of Welsh for adults has been outstanding.
Since 1989 the channel, working with Acen and high quality production companies, has ensured 28 series for Welsh learners on all levels, created 638 learning programmes, responded to over 75,000 phone calls and e-mails from learners seeking advice and guidance and distributed 4.2 million information and marketing packages.
The format of Welsh learner programmes has been adopted throughout Europe as a model for the teaching of other languages and some materials have been translated into nine languages.
Learners have, however, benefited from far more than the teaching programmes themselves.
S4C exists to provide quality Welsh language programming for everyone in Wales - and for 23 years it has been doing exactly that. Since its launch on 1 November 1982 the channel has provided 53,000 hours of Welsh language television. Faced with the huge challenge of catering for the Welsh language viewing needs of a whole nation within one service, it has worked with partners to develop its own unique brands of drama, news, current affairs, light entertainment, youth, music, sport, religion and arts and children's programmes. The quality of the productions has been internationally recognised. S4C programmes have received almost 600 awards.
